I have always made my own maps.
Even back in the AD&D 2 pre-set world I would modify the maps - mostly since the players in the game would go into sessions with extensive knowledge. Despite best attempts the players would not forget what he or she knew.
Human nature or some such crap.
Heck in college I created a world called Cull for an independent study, while also adding mutant powers and STD charts.
So I am not afraid of such work.
Though I am older now, a little more wiser, pressed for time and I really didn't want to create a world.
Learning D&D 4 rules is difficult enough without creating the universe. Still a module with a map was out of the question as I would still have to get the maps to the player and I could only imagine the look my loving wife would give me.
I solved my problem due to a love affair I have with old maps of the United States. I love them. They are amazing.
I chose 1773 as the year to use since 1) there are a lot of maps of that year and 2) I watch a ton of history channel and know what was going on at that time.
At first the players were all - what fucks? Okay only a couple were - the majority were happy they didn't have to remember weird names.
Yeah it gives a few giggles on occasion. Thanks to stuff like google maps I don't have to make up distances and game play is nice and smooth.
Plus I have a bunch of ancient maps that I plan on springing at them at some point.
